Reykjavíkurhöfn - Reykjavík Harbour - The Greater Reykjavik Area Iceland
Down Town Reykjavík, 101 Reykjavík
Region:
The Greater Reykjavik Area
About: (Description)
Right up to 1900 ships coming to Reykjavík had been forced to anchor out in the bay, people and goods being ferried to and from land in rowboats. Small piers had been built behind the shops on Hafnarstræti and elsewhere to receive them. Harbour construction started in 1913 and went well, so the first ship was able to dock in Reykjavík in 1915. The material for the harbour was mostly from the hills Skólavörðuholt and Öskjuhlíð. A railway was built between Öskjuhlíð and the harbour, along which a steam engine pulled cars loaded with stone.
In Reykjavík marina it is possible to go whale watching. There are also a number of good restaurants located near the marina.
