About: (Description)
A town situated on the southeastern shore of Kolbeinstangi spit. Its population was 550 on December 1st 2006, whereas the population of the municipality as a whole was 712. Just offshore are two islets, Miðhólmi and Skiphólmi, which form the harbour. They are connected by a man-made breakwater that serves as protection from the ocean waves. A walking path leads along the breakwater.
Vopnafjörður is an ancient trading post that thousands of people passed through during the Icelandic emigration to the West. Its main industries are fishing, fish processing, and trade/services. Vopnafjörður has a primary school and a music school, a church, the Kaupvangur cultural centre, the Mikligarður community centre, a hotel, a health centre and a swimming pool in Selárdalur, some 12 km away. A cultural festival with diverse events is held during the
second-to-last week in July every year.
How to get there:
Follow road no. 1 from Mývatn direction Egilsstaðir. After about 80 km from Mývatn take exit to road no. 85 direct to Vopnafjörður.
