Saurbær - A farm, church and parsonage. - West Iceland
Region:
West
About: (Description)
Saurbær, a farm, church and parsonage. Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614-74), the author of the Passíusálmar (“Passion Hymns”), served there 1651-69 and is buried there. Many local features bear his name, such as Hallgrímslind (“Hallgrímur’s fountain”) and Hallgrímssteinn (“Hallgrímur’s rock”), against which he is said to have sat when composing the Passíusálmar. Like Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík this church was built in his memory. It is decorated with stained glass windows by the artist
Gerður Helgadóttir.
