Helgafell - Small mountain - Snaefellsnes Iceland
Region:
Snaefellsnes
About: (Description)
Helgafell, (73 m) this small mountain, though not high, is conspicuous in the plain. It was sacred to people of the Saga age, and they hoped to die on it. The story goes that if you start from the grave of Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir and climb to the Tótt (remains of a chapel) without speaking a single word or
looking back on the way, you can have three wishes. However, the wishes must be pure-hearted, told to no one, and made while facing east by the chapel ruins. At the southern foot of Helgafell are a farm of the same name, famous in the Sagas, and a church (former parsonage). The farm was in its time the residence of Snorri goði and later of Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir of Laxdæla saga. Her grave can be seen there. From 1184 until the Reformation there was a wealthy monastery nearby. Books and manuscripts from there were burned after the reformation.
