Jökulsá á Brú (Jökulsá á Dal) - River - East Iceland
Region:
East
GPS:
The old brigde: N65°26.159 W14°35.707
About: (Description)
Jökulsá á Brú (or Jökulsá á Dal), a glacial river, at 150 km the longest river in eastern Iceland. Not fordable at any point because of its depth and strong current. Considered the muddiest of Icelandic rivers, it carries about 112 tons of clay and sand to the ocean daily. Takes in many tributaries, the biggest ones being Sauðá and Kringilsá in the interior.
Kringilsárrani, the tongue of land between Jökulsá and Kringilsá, was the area having the largest reindeer population in Iceland. Reindeer were brought there from northern Norway in the 18th century and big herds still roam in the mountain regions northeast of Vatnajökull.
