About: (Description)
(pop. 950) A town founded at the turn of century because of herring fishing, is now part of Fjarðarbyggð. After a road was built through the Fagridalur valley in 1909 the village grew larger. Trading, administration and industry.

A World War II Museum was opened in 1995 because there was an important military base located east of town. In January 1942 a platoon of British soldiers on winter exercises were caught in a very bad blizzard on the mountain above Eskifjörður. The family at Veturhús farm rescued and housed 48 of them but unfortunately another nine perished.

Reyðarfjörður is a 30 km long, the biggest of the Eastern fjords. Little flat land, but a short valley at the head.

How to get there:
Take road no. 96 from Fáskrúðsfjörður through the tunnel to Reyðarfjörður. From Egilsstaðir take road no. 92 direction south to Reyðarfjörður
