Aðalstræti ("Main street") - Reykjavík´s oldest street - The Greater Reykjavik Area Iceland
Down Town Reykjavík, 101 Reykjavík
Region:
The Greater Reykjavik Area
About: (Description)
Aðalstræti, (“Main Street”) is Reykjavík’s oldest street. Ingólfur Arnarson’s farm is generally considered to have been situated at the southern end of the street, which must then have been the path he walked along down to the sea. While Reykjavík was small, Aðalstræti was the main street, lined with the homes of influential people, the meeting house and the town’s main well, Ingólfsbrunnur (“Ingólfur’s well”), outside the present No.9. One of the oldest buildings in Reykjavík built around 1762, is No. 10, which is from the time of Skúli Magnússon.
The Settlement exhibition Reykjavik 871±2 is based on archaeological finds in Reykjavík, well-preserved ruins of a Viking- Age long house from the 10th century and objects and remains of human habitation believed to date from the 9th-century settlement of Reykjavík. The exhibition gives a clear picture of the people and their way of life at this time, and the visitor can view the ruins and the objects connected to them in addition to information in the form of texts, pictures and multimedia designed to provide an extra focus on specific aspects of the history.
The Settlement Exhibition is open every day from 10-17 and is located in Reykjavík old centre, on the corner of Aðalstræti and Suðurgata. Regular guided tours around the exhibition.
