About: (Description)
Garðabær, (pop. 9,530) a town between Kópavogur and Hafnarfjörður, gained municipal rights in 1976. Within the town’s boundaries there is a variety of natural features, extraordinary lava formations, caves etc., as well as ancient remains, now protected. Farming used to be the main occupation in Garðabær along with some fishing from the Álftanes peninsula, not far away from the fishing banks.

Today industry is growing rapidly in Garðabær. An elementary school was founded at Hausastaðir in Garðabær in 1791, marking the inception of public education in Iceland. On Arnarnes, near the junction of the roads Arnarnesvegur and Hegranesvegur, there is a concrete column, a restoration of one built by the German geophysicist Alfred Wegener in 1930 to test his theory of continental drift, which he originally advanced in the years 1908-12.
