Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík - The Reykjavík Secondary Grammar School - The Greater Reykjavik Area Iceland
By Lækjargata , 101 Reykjavík
Region:
The Greater Reykjavik Area
About: (Description)
When the Bessastaðir School was moved to Reykjavík a site “east of Lækurinn” was selected. The building was designed by Danish State Architect Jörgen Hansen Koch, the building materials imported ready-cut from Norway. Construction began in 1844 and teaching in the building in 1846. The full name of the school was then “The Learned School in Reykjavík”. South of the main building is the school’s library, built in 1866 with money donated by the Englishman Charles Kelsall. It was later named Íþaka in honour of Daniel Willard Fiske of Ithaca, N.Y, who donated a great many books and journals to the library.
