Borg á Mýrum - A church and parsonage - West Iceland
Region:
West
About: (Description)
Borg á Mýrum, a church and parsonage. Originally settled by Skallagrímur Kveldúlfsson father of the poet Egill Skallagrímsson of Egils saga. Many of his relatives and descendants lived there, including Snorri Sturluson for a time.
Tradition has it that Kjartan Ólafsson, one of the main characters of Laxdæla saga, is buried there. The sculpture Sonatorrek (“Irretrievable Loss of Sons”) by Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893-1982), based on the incident in Egils saga when Egill Skallagrímsson loses both his sons and eventually composes the long poem, Sonatorrek, as a way of dealing with his grief.
