Region:
West
About: (Description)
Hvalfjörður, (“Whale fjord”) the longest fjord in the southwest of Iceland, about 30 km long and up to 84 m deep. Formerly a good harbour,
and during the Second World War a big naval base run by the Allied Forces, where convoys often used to gather. In 1402 the plague was
brought to Hvalfjörður and from there it spread around the island. Fishing often used to be good and great quantities of herring have been caught
