Elliðaárdalur - The Valley of Elliðaár Rivers - The Greater Reykjavik Area Iceland
Region:
The Greater Reykjavik Area
About: (Description)
Elliðaárdalur, (“The valley of the Elliðaár Rivers”). The Elliðaár Rivers are mentioned as early as in Landnámabók: “Ketilbjörn went to Iceland when there were a number of settlements on the coast. His ship was named Elliði. He came to the Elliðaár estuary below the heath.” The hydro-electric plant near the river mouth began operating in 1921, and the rivers now belong to Reykjavík Electricity.
Shortly before 1900, Englishmen started using the Elliðaár for angling since when other types of fishing have not been employed there. The rivers are now among the best salmon rivers in the country, and Reykjavík is probably the only capital city in the world to have such a river within its boundaries.
