Lútetnar & Þrengslaborgir - Row of craters - North East Iceland
By road number 1 by Mývatn,
Region:
North East
About: (Description)
Lúdentsborgir, a row of craters east of
Mývatn
. They are a continuation of Þrengslaborgir, having erupted at the same time. Named for the explosion crater Lúdent to the southwest, which has a diameter of 600–800 m and depth of 60–70 m.
The crater rims rise about 100 m above the surrounding terrain. In 1968 Lúdentsborgir was the training area for Neil Armstrong and other astronauts before the moon landing.
Þrengslaborgir, a very impressive row of craters, north of the mountain Bláfjall, from which lava, known as Laxárhraun, flowed over the centre of the
Mývatn
district continued down Laxárdalur valley and north along Aðaldalur, covering a total area of 170 km2. Believed to be 2,000 years old and
Mývatn
in its present form of a similar age.
