Hveragerði, (pop. 2,190) a small town, rapidly growing. Great geothermal area with lots of greenhouses, where a tropical climate is created. Two fifths of the greenhouses in Iceland are in Hveragerði. The best known hot spring is Gry´ta which spouts every two hours, up to a height of 12 metres. Earth tremors are frequent in this area and the hot springs are often changed by new ones coming up and old ones dying out.

In the great quakes of 1896 a whizzing sound was heard all over the district and people thought that a tidal wave was coming in or a volcanic eruption had started in the vicinity. A new hot spring had arisen near Hveragerði and
the sound came from there. Many deep drillholes have been harnessed for heating purposes and for electricity.

How to get there:
From Reykjavík take road no. 1 direction Selfoss. After about 45 km drive from Reykjavík you will arrive to Hveragerði by road no. 1
