Region:
South West
About: (Description)
Selfoss, (pop. 6,200) is a part of the Municipality of Árborg. A town situated by the bridge of the river Ölfusá. In 1891 a bridge, which used to be the biggest construction in Iceland, was built across Ölfusá, after which the town began to grow. A new bridge was built in 1945. Selfoss is the largest town in South Iceland and the main service centre of trade and industry.
The Tourist Information Centre is located in the public library. Various accommodation options can be found in the town for example a hotel, a few guesthouses and a campsite. Many interesting restaurants and cafés are situated in Selfoss. At Svarfhóll, on the outskirt of Selfoss, there is an attractive 9 hole golf course on the bank of the Ölfusá river. Furthermore, the town has an outdoor swimming pool with steam bath and hot tubs, galleries, a cinema and a bus terminal. Like all good service centres Selfoss has a sheriff, a hospital, great variety of shops, two comprehensive schools and a college. The largest dairy in Iceland is in Selfoss.
The National Circular Highway no. 1 leads through the town. Many scheduled trips go from Selfoss to, for example, Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir and to the wilderness of Þórsmörk. North of Selfoss is
Hellisskógur with nice hiking paths by the Ölfusá river and a view over the golf course. The distance from the capital is 57 km.
