About: (Description)
Svalbarðseyri, (pop. 200) a village and former trading place. The cooperative movement was a major force throughout Iceland for nearly a century, and it was here that the first Icelandic cooperative society, Kaupfélag Þingeyinga (established 1882), started its activities and Kaupfélag Svalbarðseyrar had its headquarters 1889-1986.

The village was granted municipal rights in 1894. Formerly a herring-salting station.
There is an attractive forest grove at the turn-off to Svalbarðseyri, as well as the Safnasafn museum, displaying folk art and special collections of dolls, crafts, matchboxes, and more. The museum is open in summer.

How to get there:
From Akureyri take road no. 1 North direction Húsavík. After about 13 km you will see the exit to Svalbarðseyri.
