Akranes is a picturesque town a short drive away from Reykjavik. The town gained municipal rights in 1941. The main activities are fishing, fish processing, commerce and industry. The town is famous for its cement factory. The town has extensive harbor facilities, a lighthouse, secondary school, trade school, and a sports stadium. As well as being an important fisheries centre, Akranes has repeatedly made its name in sports, both nationally and even internationally, and the town has the facilities to show for it.

On Akratorg square is the sculpture Memorial to sailors, by Marteinn Guðmundsson and in front of the old people’s home Grettir’s Challenge by Magnús Tómasson. Row boat fishing started there centuries ago and there was some sort of village already in the 17th century.

How to get there:
From Reykjavík take road no. 1 direction Akureyri. After going through the tunnel take the exit to Akranes from the roundabout
