Austurstræti ("East Street") - Many restaurants and cafes - The Greater Reykjavik Area Iceland
Down Town Reykjavík, 101 Reykjavík
Region:
The Greater Reykjavik Area
About: (Description)
Austurstræti, (“East Street”) was originally a path along the north side of Austurvöllur Green from Aðalstræti to Lækurinn (“The brook”). About 1820 the path was paved with stones and an open drain built alongside it. The path was then called Langastétt (“The long pavement”), or, in Danish, Lange Fortoug. In 1848 when a number of streets in Reykjavík were given names, Langastétt was named Austurstræti in view of the direction it took from Aðalstræti.
