Gullfoss Waterfall south Iceland

Gullfoss, (“Golden falls”) in the river Hvítá, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland and a favourite with tourists. It falls 32 m in two cascades. The canyon below the falls is
2,500 m long and 70 m deep, a magnificent sight. Gullfoss is state property. An information centre is located near the falls.

Pjaxi, a dell in the canyon not far below Gullfoss. Birch-bushes and rich vegetation. The name is probably derived from the Latin word pax, meaning peace.

Brattholt, a farm to which part of Gullfoss used to belong. Well-known because of the struggle of the farmer Tómas Tómasson (1845-1926) and his daughter Sigríður Tómasdóttir (1871-1957) to prevent Gullfoss being sold to foreign buyers. A statue of Sigríður by Gullfoss commemorates her victory.

How to get there:
Take road no. 1 from Reykjavík. Just before you arrive at Selfoss take exit to road no. 35 to Geysir. Gullfoss is about 70 km from that exit.
