Herðubreið - A table mountain with a crater at its top - North East Iceland
Region:
North East
About: (Description)
Herðubreið, (1,682 m) a table mountain with a crater at its top, rising 1,000 to 1,100 m above the surrounding highlands. One of the most majestic mountains in Iceland, with a nearly round base having a circumference of 8-9 km. The mountain is tuff with a basalt shield and steep screes all around. It was long held to be impossible to climb, the first ascent being in 1908 by Hans Reck and Sigurður Sumarliðason. The easiest route is directly from the west, but even this is difficult and there is always the very real danger of rockfalls.
