Súðavík - Town - Westfjords Iceland
Region:
Westfjords
About: (Description)
Súðavík, (pop. 220) town, primary industries are fish processing and fishing, with tourism also a growing sector. According to the Book of Settlements, Eyvindur kné and his wife Þuríður rymgylta arrived in Iceland at Álftafjörður
and Seyðisfjörður in the 10th century, from Agder in Norway.
A town began forming in Álftafjörður in the mid 19th century and Súðavík was first mentioned as a village in the 1880 census. In 1883, a group of Norwegians opened a whaling station in Langeyri that was in operation for two decades, as well as a whaling station on Dvergasteinseyri. They also set up operations at Hattareyri in Álftafjörður and Uppsalaeyri in Seyðisfjörður.
There are numerous marked hiking paths in the Súðavík area, including an old
mail route leading from the bottom of Álftafjörður fjord, over to Önundarfjörður fjord.
Súðavík was hit by a snowavalanche on 16 January 1995. The avalanche claimed 14 lives, including eight children, while 12 people were rescued.
A total of 16 homes were hit by the avalanche and most were destroyed. After the avalanche, a decision was made to construct a new residential area in a secure location near Eyrardalsá river.
On 30 April 1995, ground was broken for the new residential area in Súðavík. By autumn 1996 the foundations of 51 new buildings had been laid and construction was fully completed that winter. Eight houses were moved from the older residential area to the new.
